Distinctive Features of Classic Irezumi.

Classic Irezumi tattoos represent one of the oldest forms of traditional Japanese tattoo style. Unlike many modern tattoo styles, which often focus on isolated motifs, Irezumi is designed as a complete visual system. Flowing with the body’s natural form and carrying layers of symbolism, it remains one of the most distinctive art forms in tattooing.

In this print from Heroes of the Suikoden, Yoshitoshi presents Kyumonryu receiving his namesake tattoos. With all outlines and one sleeve complete, the tebori master begins to shade the hero’s shoulders. With his right index finger extended along the bamboo of the hari, the tattoo artist holds the skin taught and the sumi brush with the left hand. Depicting the prepared ink and different hari on the floor next to the artist, Yoshitoshi reveals the tools and practice of tebori during the Edo period.

Traditions & Principles

Irezumi, also known as Horimono or Wabori, has deep roots in Japanese culture and history. Flourishing during the Edo period under the influence of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, it became a living art form. Beyond visual beauty, Irezumi embodies Zen principles:

•  Gaman – the endurance and patience required to receive and wear a tattoo.

•  Transformation – tattoos as a path of personal change.

•  Way of life – a disciplined practice where art becomes part of identity.

Types of Irezumi

Two classic Japanese tattoo layouts define the structure of Irezumi:


• Nuki-bori - clean, standalone motifs without background, emphasizing symbolic clarity.


• Gaku-bori – framed compositions with extensive backgrounds that unify the entire tattoo.

Composition & Flow

In traditional Japanese tattooing, composition follows the body’s anatomy, transforming skin into living art.

• Shudai - the main motif, such as a dragon, koi, or deity, carrying symbolic power.

• Keshoubori - supporting secondary motifs like cherry blossoms or maple leaves.

• Background - waves, wind bars, rocks, clouds, or fire, tying everything into a single flow.

Framing (Mikiri)

In Irezumi tattoo design, Mikiri marks the border between inked and bare skin. It is one of the most distinctive visual features of the style.

Types of Mikiri

• Matsuba – straight, needle-like lines

• Botan-giri – wavy borders inspired by peony petals

• Bukkiri – sharp, cut-off edges

• Akebono – fading borders like daybreak

• Jari – dotted “gravel” fade-out

Over time, classic Irezumi tattoos have evolved under the influence of new technology and changing public perception.

Today, a contemporary approach known as Gendai Irezumi is widely practiced around the world. While we respect both traditions, in our studio we remain closer to the classic concepts of traditional Japanese tattoo style, focusing on flow, symbolism, and harmony.

  • What is IREZUMI?

    Irezumi is a traditional Japanese style of tattooing that is created using large scale motifs based on Japanese mythology and scenes from nature. Irezumi is known for its dark and vast backgrounds based on water, wind and clouds that encompasses the entire area around the main motif and fills the body part being tattooed, including the whole body except hands, feet, head, face and neck in the case of a proper traditional bodysuit.


    Japanese tattoo(Irezumi)- one of the most popular style in modern tattooing. Being looking quite illustrative, it’s traditionally deeply symbolical. Every element of Japanese tattoo design has it’s particular meaning and purpose.   • What is 'Irezumi Pattern'?

    In traditional Irezumi, the tattoo design is based on a full-body concept. It is created in sections that correspond to different body parts. Each section has its own unique pattern that can be appreciated individually, but also fits together with the surrounding sections.

  • Can I get a small tattoo done in Irezumi style?

    Technically yes, and this is called ‘one point tattoo’. In our studio we specialize in Gakubori – framed tattoo and do ONLY large scaled tattoos which take entire body part and naturally framed by that part of the body.
