Arm Sleeve

Hikae

Hikae refers to the chest panel section of a traditional Japanese tattoo (irezumi). Specifically, it is the upper chest area that connects to the arm, typically extending from the shoulder onto the chest, often reaching just above the nipple, though the coverage can vary depending on personal preference. In many traditional designs, the hikae helps create a seamless transition between the sleeve (kaina) and the chest, ensuring visual harmony and flow in the tattoo composition.

Tattooing only the arm and stopping at the shoulder is considered less harmonious in traditional Japanese aesthetics. Extending the design into the hikae area allows for a more natural and unified appearance, integrating the tattoo with the body’s contours.
