A three-quarter sleeve covers the arm from the shoulder down to the lower forearm, stopping short of the wrist. It carries almost the full composition of a sleeve but leaves the wrist and lower forearm bare, which is most often a practical choice: the work stays hidden under a long-sleeve shirt and cuff. The design is built as a full sleeve would be, with the ending planned at the forearm rather than the wrist.

Flow and Muscle Logic

The composition runs the same path as a full sleeve, from the main subject on the upper arm, across the elbow, and down the forearm, but it resolves before the wrist. The forearm is where the design tightens and the mikiri border closes it off, so the ending is planned where a cuff naturally sits. Stopping at the lower forearm keeps the flow intact while leaving a clean break, rather than thinning the design out toward the wrist.

Traditional Layout

The three-quarter follows the sleeve structure in full, shudai on the upper arm, background flowing the length of the arm, mikiri at the shoulder and on the lower forearm. The lower border is the main difference from a full sleeve, set high enough on the forearm to disappear under a shirt. The shoulder is planned for connection to the chest and back in the usual way if a larger design follows.

Who It Is For

A three-quarter sleeve suits someone who wants nearly a full sleeve but needs the lower forearm and wrist left bare, so the work stays covered under a long-sleeve shirt and cuff. The length is chosen for that reason and planned once.

As with any sleeve, the length is decided at the start and built as a whole. A three-quarter is not a stage on the way to a full sleeve: it is resolved for its own length, and extending it to the wrist later is always a compromise in subject and composition. If a full arm is the goal, a full sleeve is planned from the start.

A three-quarter sleeve is built from the shoulder down to the forearm. A piece on the forearm alone is a different request, and not how I build sleeve work, since a sleeve reads from the top of the arm down. If the arm is the goal, the length is decided at the start.
