Orange Koi and Maple Leaves Sleeve

Orange Koi and Maple Leaves Sleeve
An Autumn Climb
One orange koi, black water, and a scatter of red maple leaves. This three quarter sleeve is built on restraint: the palette is reduced to two colors, and both of them belong to autumn. The fish climbs, the leaves fall, and the water carries both.

Three Quarters, Fully Planned
The sleeve runs from the shoulder to below the elbow, closing on a clean mikiri edge above the wrist. The koi takes the upper arm, the widest surface available, while the water continues the movement down the forearm. The composition was planned as a complete three quarter format from the start, not as a shortened full sleeve.

One Color for the Fish, One for the Season
The concept rests on a simple opposition. The koi carries all the warmth of the design in its orange body. The maple leaves answer it in red, marking the season and the direction of the current. Everything else stays in black and grey: spiral water, controlled and quiet, built to push the fish upward without competing with it. Two colors, one fish, one season.

The Current Follows the Muscle
The koi head sits on the deltoid, where the arm offers its broadest and most stable canvas. The body bends with the natural line of the biceps, so the upward swim reads correctly whether the arm hangs or lifts. Water spirals wrap the forearm in the direction of its rotation, and the mikiri edges keep the sleeve looking intentional at every border.

Structure Before Warmth
The work followed the order that keeps large compositions honest: outline first, locking the koi and the water in place, then the full black and grey of the current, and only then the color. The orange and red went in last, on top of a finished tonal structure, which is what lets them glow against the dark water.

A Quiet Sleeve with a Loud Center
The finished sleeve proves that restraint reads louder than saturation. One warm subject in a cold current, a handful of falling leaves, and a frame of calm black. It is an autumn piece in the most literal sense: a season, a direction, and a fish that keeps climbing anyway.
