Some patterned sleeves are a quiet fabric. This one is a landscape. A waterfall drives white water between dark rocks, red peonies open along the waterline, and the rocks themselves carry a secret: sayagata, the interlocked brocade pattern, carved into their faces. Maximum flower, rushing water, and stone that turns out to be woven.

A waterfall drives white water between dark rocks, red peonies open along the waterline, and the rocks themselves carry a secret: sayagata, the interlocked brocade pattern, carved into their faces. Maximum flower, rushing water, and stone that turns out to be woven.
One Arm of a Pair
The piece is a three quarter sleeve built as a stylized landscape with two anchors beyond the arm: a rock-and-water corner with a full peony on the front of the shoulder, and a patterned rock panel on the shoulder blade. It is also one half of a conversation - the client wears a companion sleeve on the other arm, and the two compositions balance the body without mirroring each other. Symmetry here is a mood, not a copy.

Water, Stone, and Flower
Three elements, three tempos. The water moves fastest: a churning current of finger waves cutting through the whole sleeve. The peonies live at the water's edge, blooming in reds and pinks exactly where the current slows. And the rocks stand still - stylized almost past recognition, their faces covered in sayagata like moss of pure geometry. Putting the pattern on the stone does one useful thing: it makes the slowest element of the landscape the most intricate one. The eye rushes with the water, rests on the flowers, and gets lost in the rock.
Water, Stone, and Flower

Each peony sits where the arm offers a stable stage: the shoulder, the outer upper arm, the forearm. The rocks and the current take the transitions - the inner arm, the elbow - where their flexible shapes absorb movement that would distort a flower. The chest corner ties the sleeve to the torso, and the blade panel does the same behind, so the arm reads as part of the body, not a decorated cylinder.

Each peony sits where the arm offers a stable stage: the shoulder, the outer upper arm, the forearm. Stone First, Then the Current, Then Bloom
The order was strict: outline for flowers, water, and rock edges; then black and grey building the depth of stone and stream, left to heal. Only then the fine sayagata linework, laid across the settled rock faces - put the pattern in first and the shading buries it. The color pass came last and carried almost the entire palette in two families - the reds of the peonies and the teal of the leaves - with the patterned rock left in quiet greyscale underneath.

On its own, the sleeve is a complete statement: a full landscape compressed onto an arm - waterfall, patterned stone, and a dense floral composition. On the body, it is half of something bigger: two sleeves by one hand, answering each other across the chest. That kind of long-term, whole-body thinking is exactly what irezumi was built for.
