Blue Dragon and Sakura Full Sleeve

Blue Dragon and Sakura Full Sleeve
Thunder in Spring
A dragon is weather. This one arrives in spring: blue scales moving through dark clouds with sakura in full bloom around them. The sleeve is built on that collision - the largest creature in irezumi set among its briefest flower.

An Arm That Spills Past the Shoulder
The composition covers the full arm and does not stop at the shoulder seam in either direction. On the back, the dragon's body and the cloud field continue onto the shoulder blade, giving the creature room to actually coil. On the front, a chest panel carries black cloud and large sakura across the pectoral. The head takes the upper arm, the body wraps the sleeve, and the clouds tie arm, chest and back into one continuous field.

Scales Against Blossom
Everything in this sleeve is a contrast pair. Hard scale against soft blossom. Scales drawn large enough to hold their shape for decades against a flower that lives a week. The blue of the dragon holds the cool center of the palette, the sakura answers in warm pink, and the clouds keep both in one storm. One warm accent belongs to the dragon itself: the yellow-orange crest, curled into a spiral around the elbow. The spiral is deliberate - a stylization of the way force develops in the universe, turning rather than running straight. The dragon is the only actor; the season is the stage.

Coiling With the Joint
A dragon on an arm lives or dies by its coil. The body follows the natural spiral of the limb, and the elbow is not avoided but used: the crest winds around the joint itself, so the bend reads as part of the turn instead of a break in the line. The head sits on the widest plane of the upper arm, readable from the front. The extension onto the shoulder blade absorbs the widest part of the body where the arm alone would run out of room, and the chest panel gives the sakura a flat plane large enough to be drawn at full size. In motion the coil tightens and releases with the muscle underneath it.

From Skeleton to Storm
Large dragon work starts as pure structure: the spine line of the creature drawn first, because every scale and claw hangs off that one curve. The sakura was placed in that same first drawing, not added later - each blossom has its position in the outline, and the clouds were built around them. The outline locked the coil, black built the clouds and the depth, and color arrived last, the blue body built up in layers.

A Guardian in Season
The finished sleeve carries a dragon the way the tradition intends: not as a picture of an animal but as weather moving across the body. The blue reads cold and calm, the sakura keeps it human, and the extensions onto the back and the chest give the composition the one thing most dragon sleeves lack - space to breathe.
