Irezumi Motifs
The traditional Japanese motifs used in large-scale composition, and how each one behaves on the body.
In irezumi, a motif is never just an image placed on the skin. Each one carries meaning, but it also has a job inside the composition: a direction it wants to move, a scale it reads best at, a place on the body where it sits naturally, and other motifs it belongs with. A dragon behaves differently from a koi, and a peony supporting a shishi is not the same as a peony standing alone. The pages below explain what each motif means, how it works in a composition, and where it fits in a full-body design.

Motifs and Composition
A motif does not function independently from the tattoo that contains it. Subject matter, supporting elements, scale, and anatomical flow all shape how meaning is experienced within a finished composition.
In large-scale work, symbolism is inseparable from structure.

Plan the Whole Piece
Every motif is chosen for what it carries and where it sits in the larger composition. The booking guide explains how a project begins and what I need from you to plan it.
