A leg sleeve covers the leg as one continuous composition, usually from the upper thigh down to the ankle. Like an arm sleeve it is seen in the round, so it is designed to resolve from every angle rather than from a single front view. The leg gives more length and more surface than the arm, which allows a larger main subject and a fuller background, but it also crosses the knee, the one joint that bends sharply and constantly. The sleeve is built around one shudai with supporting motifs and a background that runs the full length, planned as a whole before any section is committed.

Flow and Muscle Logic

The leg is long and changes shape along its length: a heavy thigh, the hinge of the knee, the calf, and the narrowing ankle. The main subject usually sits on the thigh or the outer calf, where there is the most room and the most visibility, and the background carries the movement across the knee. The knee is the leg sleeve equivalent of the elbow: the composition moves through it rather than placing a key detail on the kneecap, which stretches and folds. The back of the knee is a soft, sensitive zone and is usually handled with background rather than dense detail. A leg sleeve has to read while walking, sitting, and standing, so motion is part of the design from the start.

Traditional Layout

In Japanese tradition the leg is part of the full body suit, and leg work follows the same structure as the rest: a main subject anchored on the largest surface, background flowing around it, and a mikiri border defining where the tattoo ends, usually at the ankle and high on the thigh. When the leg is part of a full suit, the upper thigh transition is planned so the leg connects cleanly to the seat and stomach. Subject and setting stay consistent, and the background sets direction along the length of the leg rather than just filling space.

Who It Is For

A leg sleeve can be built at different lengths, all measured from the top down: a full leg from the upper thigh to the ankle, a seven-tenths length ending on the lower calf, or a short leg ending just above the knee. Each is a complete design for the length it covers. A leg sleeve is a long-term, multi-session commitment and a strong choice for someone who wants major work that stays private under clothing most of the time. It suits people planning toward a larger body project, since the legs are part of any full suit. The thigh sessions are among the more demanding to sit, so it favours people prepared for a longer process.

A leg sleeve is built from the thigh down. A piece running only from the knee to the ankle, a lower-leg sleeve worked upward from the foot, is a different request, and not how I build leg work. The format reads from the top of the leg down, so the design cannot start at the ankle and climb. If the leg is the goal, it is planned from the thigh down to the chosen length.
