Red Dragon and Blue Lotus Sleeve
The Dragon Comes Down
Most dragon sleeves climb. This one descends. The tail holds the chest in a closed coil, the body pours over the shoulder, and the head arrives at the forearm, face forward, eyes open. A dragon moving from sky to earth reads differently than one going up: less ambition, more arrival.

Tail on the Chest, Head at the Wrist
The work is a full sleeve with a hikae chest panel, but the panel is not a portrait: it is the dragon's tail, coiled into a spiral of red scales and orange mane that closes the composition on the pectoral. From there the body crosses the shoulder and travels the whole arm, ending with the head above the wrist. The edges of the chest section dissolve into cloud forms instead of a hard border.

Fire Meets the Flower of Stillness
The dragon carries the hot half of the palette: red scales, purple belly, orange spines. The blue lotus carries the cold half, and it does more than decorate. In Buddhist reading the lotus is stillness and clarity, the opposite pole to the beast's heat, and here it anchors the two calm zones of the sleeve: the upper arm and the wrist. Between them the black clouds hold everything in one night-toned ground, so the fire glows instead of shouting.

A Body Poured Over the Shoulder
The descending build solves the hardest problem of a dragon sleeve: where to put the mass. The chest takes the widest coil, the shoulder carries the transfer, and the arm gets a body that narrows naturally toward the wrist, exactly as the limb itself narrows. The claws grip around the elbow, where their spread absorbs the movement of the joint. The head sits on the forearm, the surface a person shows the world most often, so the character of the piece is always in view.

Documented in Layers
The build followed the classical order: outline locking the coil from chest to wrist, black clouds setting the ground, then the color pass from cool to hot. Part of the process was filmed, and the video sits alongside this case study - a rare chance to watch a dragon assemble itself layer by layer.

Heat That Stays Composed
The finished sleeve holds a burning subject in a calm frame. The descending line gives it gravity, the lotus gives it silence, and the black ground will keep the reds sharp for decades. A dragon that has already arrived has nothing left to prove - and the composition reads exactly that way.
