Kintaro and the Giant Koi Front Panel

Kintaro and the Giant Koi Front Panel
The Boy Who Caught the Carp
Kintaro is the golden boy of Japanese legend, raised in the mountains and strong enough to wrestle bears; in the prints he is often shown with a giant carp. This front panel takes that image and gives it a job. The composition exists because of a scar, and the scar is the one thing on this torso that was never touched by a needle.

The Whole Front, No Frame
A nukibori panel across the whole front of the torso: no mikiri, the image standing on open skin. The giant koi is the mass of the piece, its head on the left pectoral, its body running diagonally across the chest and stomach, its tail at the hip. Kintaro holds it down from below, red-skinned in a patterned robe. Lotus flowers sit on the left shoulder and the far right of the chest, and water fingers fill the space between the fish and the collarbones.

Around, Not Over
The client came with a large raised keloid scar in the center of the upper chest. Skin like that cannot be tattooed: it does not hold ink predictably, and the tissue answers any trauma by growing, which is why surgery had already failed him. So the brief was not to cover the scar but to make it stop mattering. A big moving subject next to a small still one does exactly that. The eye goes where the action is: a boy pinning a fish larger than himself, dark scales and yellow fins against blue water, lotus opening around them. The scar is still there. Nobody looks at it.

Composition as Misdirection
The scar was never going to be hidden, so the design surrounds it and makes it small. It sits between the koi's head and its dorsal fin, ringed by water fingers that follow its outline without crossing it, so the pale shape is framed, not exposed. The koi runs on a diagonal from the left pectoral down across the stomach, its body bending with the abdomen when the wearer breathes or turns. Kintaro sits low and off center, his weight pulling the eye toward the belly and away from the collarbones. The lotus on the shoulder and the far side of the chest open the panel outward. Everything moves; the one thing that does not is the one thing nobody looks at.

Sessions Around a No-Go Zone
The whole panel was planned at once and built in the usual stages: outline, then black and grey, then color, over five or six sessions in 2019. One rule held at every stage: a clear margin around the keloid, since even shading near reactive tissue can wake it. The water fingers that ring the scar were the most careful lines in the piece.

Still There, No Longer the Point
The panel does what surgery could not: it does not remove the scar, it removes attention from it. Standing in a mirror, the wearer sees a legend in motion, a boy holding down a fish the size of his own torso, and the scar becomes a small pale shape in a large picture. That is the honest version of a scar tattoo - not covering what the skin will not accept, but building something around it that matters more.
